The Powell High School girls’ swim team has hit the pool in stride to begin the 2020 season. Just a week after winning events in Riverton and Cody, the Panthers added two more first-place team finishes to their resume.
Powell achieved 37 personal-best times between the two meets, with Elizabeth Liggett posting the fourth-best time in PHS history in the 100 freestyle.
At the Worland Quad meet on Friday, Powell scored more team points than Buffalo, Newcastle and Worland. Paige Thomas became the team’s 13th state qualifier, swimming 1:15.81 in the 100 butterfly.
Five Panthers won events at the meet: Elizabeth Liggett (200 freestyle and 500 freestyle), Lucia Harder (200 individual medley and 100 butterfly), Emma Karhu (1-meter six dives), Grace Sapp (100 backstroke) and Emma Mitchell (100 breaststroke). The 200 medley team of Mitchell, Harder, Grace Sapp and Madison Lowery won that event as well with a time of 2:03.85.
The next day, Powell returned home for the Powell Quad meet, and the Panthers were just as dominant. They logged 426 team points — 48.5 more than second-place Cody. Liggett landed the fourth spot on the Powell Wall of Fame with a winning time of 56.29 in the 100 freestyle.
Harder once again won the 200 individual medley, and Karhu took the six-dive crown. The 200 freestyle relay team of Mitchell, Liggett, Harder and Lowery also came in first place at 1:46.91.
The Panthers next take the pool on Thursday at the girls’ varsity triangular at the Powell Aquatic Center.
