The Powell High School freshman girls basketball team opened its season with a pair of wins this month, dominating Greybull and Cody.

Playing at the Panther Gym on Dec. 16, the Powell girls jumped out to a 22-5 halftime lead over Greybull and went on to beat the Buffaloes 50-9.

“The girls did a nice job executing what we have been practicing,” said PHS freshmen coach Andrew Borcher, adding, “We started slow but once we got going we were able to gain confidence and put Greybull away.”

Point guard Maddie Campbell scored 17 points and “did a nice job of leading our offense,” said Borcher. Kami Jensen contributed 11 points while shining on defense, the coach said.

“She has a magnet for the ball,” Borcher said of Jensen. “She is also very quick so she is able to turn her steals into quick points.”

Megan Jacobsen also cracked double figures, scoring 10 points. Borcher said she, too, helped work the team’s press.

“Megan [Jacobsen] has a motor and she plays hard all game long,” the coach said.

Other players scoring for the Panthers were Grace Coombs with six points, Mikayla Graham and Blake Nissen with two points each and Anna Bartholomew and Gretel Opps with one point apiece.

“Going into the break we got just the momentum that we needed,” said Borcher.

Playing in Cody on Dec. 20, the Fillies freshmen got out to an early lead, but “the girls kept attacking and I kept telling them the shots will fall,” he said. PHS grabbed a 21-14 lead at halftime and went on to win comfortably, 51-26.

“We don’t want our opponent to get anything easy,” Borcher said. “Our girls have really done a nice job taking that message to heart.”

Campbell and Jacobsen again hit double figures, with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Also scoring were: Abby Wambeke and Graham with six points each, Jensen with five, Nissen with four and Bartholomew, Coombs and Opps with two points apiece.

The PHS freshmen will return to the court on Thursday, playing against Rocky Mountain High School in Cowley.
