Powell dominates at Lovell Invite

Posted

Returning to the track on another sunny day the Powell Panther boys’ track team sprinted away with the team title in Lovell — finishing 71 points ahead of second place Lovell as the Panthers used strong depth to propel them to a team title.

Overall for Powell there were two double event winners, as Daniel Merritt won the 800 meters (2:02.64) and 1600 meters (4:42.66); while Hyrum Jeide swept the hurdle races, winning the 110 meter hurdles (16.78) and the 300 meter hurdles (41.93).

The other individual victor on the day was Cody Seifert in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 9 1/4 inches. A new qualifying mark came from Nathan Dupont in the same event, just reaching qualifying (20-2 1/4) to earn his first individual qualifying standard of the season.

“Nathan and Ine [Kolstad] are those unexpected blessings you get on occasion from the foreign exchange program,” coach Scott Smith said. “They are two of the nicest kids you’d ever meet and it was great to see them hit those automatic qualifiers.”

Powell had one relay victory, as the sprint medley team of Seeger Wormald, Simon Shoopman, Evan Whitlock and McKale Foley (4:13.65) pushed ahead of the competition.

The Panthers continue to see improving results week by week, something Smith said is due to the team both young and old continuing to push each other.

“It has been great to see how our team leaders, both seniors and
underclassmen, keep coming through and improving each week,” Smith said. “They all have been working very hard and it is paying off.”

WEEKEND SPLIT

Powell is scheduled to take part in two meets this weekend, starting with the Wyoming Track Classic on Friday at Kelly Walsh.

Smith is hopeful the Panthers will get a large group invited to the meet.

Powell will then take a likely younger group to Cowley on Saturday to take part in the Rocky Mountain Invitational.

“Rocky will be the last meet for many of our kids as we pare down to the kids that will be going to regionals,” Smith said.
