Powell Aquatic Center set to undergo annual maintenance

Posted

The Powell Aquatic Center will close for maintenance beginning March 22.

Tanya Bonner, co-director of the center, gave an update on the center to the Powell City Council last month on the coming closure.  The center is planning to reopen on April 5.

During that time, workers perform a deep clean of the facility, Bonner said. They perform maintenance on both boilers and anything else that needs repairs.

The work typically involves replacing water in both pools, but that won’t be the case this year.

Center staff were forced to drain the leisure pool back in January, after someone broke a pair of glass goggles in the water. While it was drained, Bonner said they replaced all the drain covers and reattached one of the floating pads in the lily pad play area. Now, they won’t have to re-drain the leisure pool during the closure.

“We took advantage of the situation,” Bonner said, speaking after the meeting. Staffers are “hoping for a shorter closure this year,” Bonner said, “but we can’t guarantee this will happen.”

The lap pool will still need to be partially drained and refilled, she said.

Membership fees are not expected to increase this year. The center has not had a rate increase since 2016.

The center will reach its 10-year anniversary in May, and Bonner said they’re planning some kind of giveaways for the milestone.

The ninth annual triathlon will be held on May 23. Last year’s event began with a 500-yard swim at the center, followed by a 15.5-mile bike race and a 5K run.

Bonner said she didn’t expect any major changes for this year’s event.
