American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Day will be observed Saturday in Powell and the red crepe paper poppy will be worn in remembrance.
During two wars (World War I and World War II) American servicemen and women shed their blood on the battle fields of France. After WWI, blood-red poppies bloomed among the white crosses which marked the graves of those who so valiantly fought for freedom. WWII increased the spectacle.
Today, there are monuments along the ocean shores of France, both winter and summer. Bouquets of red silk poppies adorn the bases — a tribute to those who gave so much.
Poppies honor all of America’s war dead as well as the millions of Americans who have served their country. The poppies are handmade by volunteers in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. The American Legion Auxiliary provides the material for the poppies, and veterans receive compensation for each poppy made.
On Saturday, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 26 members and volunteers will be at various locations around Powell with the poppies. Poppies are not sold — they are given in exchange for a contribution. Funds derived from the poppy program are used for local veterans, their widows and their children as well as supporting veterans at the Sheridan VA hospital and the Veterans Home of Wyoming in Buffalo.
“Show you care,” organizers say. “Wear a poppy.”
