Pioneer B’s split pair with Cody

A bounce-back second game carried the Powell Pioneers B team to a doubleheader split with the Cody Cubs B team in Tuesday Legion baseball in Powell.

Cody put on a bunting clinic in the opener en route to a 9-1 win. Powell sprayed 14 hits in six innings to record a 16-6 walk-off win in the nightcap.

“The intensity by our guys was the difference between game one and game two,” said B team coach Tyler England. “We had a bunch of quality at-bats from top to bottom. We showed a ton of good discipline at the plate and didn’t have guys chasing.”

By rule in American Legion Baseball, the B team classification by age group is 17 and under.

“Most of our guys are 15, with a couple of 14-year-olds,” England said, though 17-year-old Kobe Ostermiller pitched for the team in the second game to get some work.

Ostermiller pitched three innings and left with a 7-5 lead. He gave up just four hits, while walking three and hitting three batters. Keaton Rowton and Ethan Welch shut Cody down, with no runs and only one hit through the final three innings.

Rowton led the offensive production in game two with a perfect 5-for-5 showing at the plate. Kolt Flores had three hits in each game of the doubleheader.

The Pioneers closed out the second game on the 10-rule by putting seven runs on the scoreboard in the sixth inning.

After the first game, England concluded that his B defense against the bunt needs work.

“They [Cody] probably scored about five runs on bunts,” England said.

Flores, who started on the mound for the Pioneers, threw well in his six innings of pitching, giving up only five hits and just two walks.

“But not being able to get outs on bunts turned into some long innings,” England said. “Bunts killed us. I’ve got to have us better prepared for those situations.”
