Conference duals in Lyman this weekend

The Powell High School volleyball team traveled to Buffalo Saturday for a match against 2A powerhouse Sundance.

The Lady Panthers gave the Lady Bulldogs all they could handle before eventually falling in five sets, 3-2.

“Not as good as we were hoping as far as getting a win,” said PHS head coach Tasha Miller. “We’ve had some players out with sickness and we had some new rotations to try and work out, so given the circumstances, I think the girls played the best they could.”

It was a back-and-forth match, with both teams alternating wins until the final set. Powell won the first and third sets by identical 25-22 scores; Sundance won the second set 25-16 and the fourth 25-20.

The final set went to Sundance 15-11 for the win. Despite the tough loss, Miller said the team played well considering most were playing out of their comfort zones.

“It was great that even though most of the girls were playing in new positions, they were all open-minded on giving it a try in order to find a rotation that works best for our team,” she said.

Rose Graft led the charge for Powell, with 10 kills to go along with 19 digs; Kady Wells and Gabby Harshman finished with seven kills apiece.

Libero Michele Wagner led the team in digs with 25, while Sabrina Shoopman finished with 20. Gabi Metzler had 14 assists, while Madi Fields finished with 12 assists to go along with two aces.

The Lady Panthers are on the road to Lyman this weekend for conference duals; after that, there are just three games left in the regular season. Miller said she’s hoping for a strong finish.

“I think the girls have improved so much and I think they are progressing at a good rate to, hopefully, have a stronger end to the season,” she said. “I am really enjoying their personalities and their willingness to try new positions and rotations to see what works best for everyone.”

As for the task at hand, Miller said conference duals will be an opportunity to continue to work on the little things.

“We are still trying to work on our quick game — we seem to get it down in practice, but when we get to a game, the girls get too nervous to run their plays,” she said. “So our mental game is still a goal to improve, but that has come a long way from the beginning.”
