The Powell High School volleyball team ended its regular season on a high note last Thursday with a straight-set sweep of Lovell at Panther Gym.
The win also represented the final home game for the Lady Panthers’ six seniors — Michele Wagner, Kady Wells, Gabi Metzler, Gabby Harshman, Sabrina Shoopman and Madi Fields. That group was honored as part of Powell’s senior night.
“It was definitely special to have a win on senior night,” said PHS head coach Tasha Miller. “The seniors and the team as a whole have worked so hard this season and they played so well that night, it was a great way to end the regular season.”
Powell downed the Lady Bulldogs in three sets 25-17, 25-12, 25-20 to finish 8-18-2 overall and 2-5 in the Northwest Quadrant. They’ll go into this weekend’s 3A Regional Tournament in Lander as the No. 3 seed out of the Northwest.
“There were so many good moments ... I think they were all able to end their last home match with a game to be proud of,” Miller said.
Playing against Lovell (1-27, 0-6 in the quadrant), Fields led Powell with two aces, followed by one each from Metzler and Rose Graft.
Graft had nine kills, followed by Shoopman with eight and Harshman with six. Metzler had 14 assists, followed by Fields with seven; Metzler led with 14 digs, followed by Wagner with 11. Wells and Graft finished with 10 digs apiece.
The Lady Panthers open play at the Class 3A West regional tournament in Lander at 1:30 p.m. Friday against Mountain View. The winner will play the Worland v. Big Piney winner at 6 p.m., while the loser will square off against the loser of that match in a 6 p.m. elimination game.
Miller said the Lady Panthers are peaking at the right time, and hope to carry the momentum of their win against Lovell into the weekend.
“I think all aspects of our game are starting to click, which is exciting going into regional weekend,” the coach said. “I think as long as we can keep our mental game strong and keep focused on the end goal, we will have a great weekend.”
Miller also heaped praise on her senior crew for making her first season at the helm a memorable one.
“I will miss each one of my seniors,” she said. “Each of them has brought such a great dynamic to our team that will be missed, for sure. Their personalities, hard work and leadership made for a great season.”
