PHS track teams excel at Rocky Mountain Invite

Posted

Saturday was a beautiful sunny day in Cowley for the Rocky Mountain Invitational, and the spring-like weather inspired the Powell High School track and field teams to their strongest showing this season.

“I was really happy with that meet, we had some great breakout performances. We threw a few kids into some new events and they really did well,” said PHS head track coach Scott Smith. “I was really happy we finally had some nice weather, and the kids responded. They came out and performed; they took advantage of it and did well.”

The Panthers topped the leaderboard in team scoring, finishing first with 170 points in the nine-school field. Lovell finished second with 162 points and Big Horn took third with 121.5.

The Lady Panthers were first as well, racking up 185.5 points; Lovell was a distant second with 118.3 points, followed by Big Horn in third with 80.8.

Lady Panthers

The Lady Panthers had a spectacular meet, with nine first-place finishes on the day.

Emma Karhu was part of three first-place finishes, claiming the top spot in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.68 and the pole vault — splitting first-place honors with Maddy Hanks at a state-qualifying height of 9 feet, 3 inches. Hanks and Emma Karhu also ran legs of the winning 4x400 relay team, joined by Sabrina Shoopman and JuliaKay O’Neill. They posted a time of 4:18.72.

The girls 4x100 relay team of Caitlyn Miner, Karlie McKenzie, Shoopman and Aubrie Stenerson also finished first in 53:89. With those times, both relay teams qualified for state.

Sidney O’Brien was first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:46.58, while Sabrina Shoopman continued to turn in strong performances in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing first with a time of 17.67.

Stenerson won in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 2 inches, to go along with a fourth-place finish in the 100 meter dash.

“Aubrie [Stenerson] has done a nice job for us,” Smith said. “This is a girl who came out for us as a sophomore, she had never done track before. She’s just been steadily getting better. Her best in the long jump up until this meet was 15 feet, 3 inches; here she went 16 feet, 2 inches. Only one jumper in the history of Powell High School has ever gone farther, and she’s jumping at the University of Wyoming right now.”

Thrower Rachel Bonander took the top spot in the shot put (93 feet, 10.75 inches) and was runner-up in the the discus (100 feet, 9 inches).

Lady Panther Gracen Curtis finished third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:08.08, while Madelyn Horton finished second in the 3200 meters at 14:44.14. Gabri Lundberg was fourth in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 6 inches.

Panthers

The Panthers finished first in five events: Four individual events and one relay. Brody Karhu won the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.08, Jay Cox was first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.25 and Alan Merritt took the top spot in both the 1600 and 3200 meters, with times of 4:50.78 and 10.44, respectively. The boys’ sprint medley relay team of Jon Morrow, Jacob Harrison, Kaelan Groves and Brody Karhu also finished first.

“Brody [Karhu] in the 400 was impressive,” Smith said of his state-qualifying performance. “A year ago at this time, he lost to the kid from Lovell [Porter Nichols] that he beat Saturday by a full second. That’s the kind of improvement you like to see. This is a kid that did indoor track [Nichols] while Brody was wrestling. It was a pretty impressive performance.”

In the 100 meter dash, Jacob Harrison and Kaelan Groves finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Harrison also finished fifth in the 200 meters, followed by AJ Lewis in sixth. Kacey Creed finished sixth in the 110 meter hurdles, while Powell finished fourth in the 4x100 relay and third in the 4x400 relay.

In the field events, Colby Warner took fourth in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 10 inches. Charlie Hall was sixth in the event at 5 feet, 8 inches. Dylan Preator was the top Powell placer in the long jump and triple jump.

In the throwing events, Geordan Weimer finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, 10.75 inches, followed by Cayden Lynn in 11th with a toss of 35 feet, 9 inches.

Ryan Good finished second in the discus with a throw of 124 feet, 8 inches. Shay Dillon was sixth at 115 feet, 10 inches.

Smith said the pole vault results continue to impress as the season continues, with three girls and three boys now qualified for state in the event. He credits the hard work and dedication of pole vault coordinator Dan Hunter and assistant coach Greg Bennett with the vaulters’ success.

“Those two [Hunter and Bennett] are doing a great job,” Smith said. “The work they’ve done with these kids is tremendous. A few years ago we decided to make a commitment to support pole vaulting. Up until then, Cody had just been dominating the pole vault; they’re still pretty dominant, but at least we’re knocking on the door. We’re gaining on an extremely well-run program.”
