PHS swim team pushes forward in busy stretch

Posted

As the postseason approaches, Powell High School swim’s workload has increased. With five events in the last two weeks, the Panthers haven’t gotten much rest.

But that hasn’t slowed them down.

PHS traveled to Worland on Jan. 26 and took first, before heading to Buffalo on Friday and taking second.

“The team did really well, considering we had three meets last week and only a few practices since the last one,” PHS coach Jerry Rodriguez said.

At the Worland Quad, the Panthers posted 355 points as a team and won seven of the 12 events.

Individual first-place finishers were Nate Johnston (200 individual medley), Cole Frank (1-meter diving), Ru Parker (100 free) and Tarren Blackmore (500 free and 100 breast). Relay teams that finished first were the 200 free (Ashtin Prentiss, Kyler Warren, Frank, Blackmore) and 400 free (Parker, Frank, Prentiss, Johnston).

Rodriguez also noted other “great” swims from Prentiss — who qualified for state in the 200 individual medley for the first time in his career — as well as personal bests from Rogers, Warren and Frank.

The Panthers entered the Buffalo meet “very tired,” according to Rodriguez, but the Panthers still posted 70 points as a team and notched two first-place finishes.

Parker cut 7.57 seconds off his 200 individual medley time to win the event and qualify for state, and Jon Hawley placed first in 1-meter diving. Qualifying for the Class 3A State Meet in the 200 IM, Parker became the third Panther to qualify for all eight state swimming events.

Another swimmer who impressed coach Rodriguez was Hunter Davis. Davis missed a wall on a turn and had to turn around to avoid disqualification in the 200 free, but he was still able to shave 26 seconds off his time in the event.

The team heads to Lander on Saturday for the 3A West Conference Championship, and the week leading up to the event marks the Panthers’ last of two-a-day practices. PHS will then begin tapering for the state meet in Laramie on Feb. 19-20.
