When sports make their long-awaited return in August, student-athletes will be in better hands than ever.
Powell Valley Healthcare and the Moyer Foundation have teamed up to contribute more than $7,400 for new athletic training equipment at Powell High School. Each of the organizations covered half of the cost, and the money will be used to fund a taping table, two therapy tables and a portable gurney.
“We would like to offer a sincere thank you to both organizations for their contributions toward the purchase,” PHS activities director Scott McKenzie said. “The new training tables provide us with a more stable platform and surface to examine and treat our athletes.”
The Panthers’ previous therapy tables had been in use for 25 years and were severely outdated. The improved tables have the ability to alter limb height, elevating extremities and reducing swelling during intense procedures.
“It was time to upgrade,” said PHS athletic trainer Alan Hill. “This is equipment that every single student-athlete at PHS may use or sit upon at some point during their time in athletics. Their contribution is crucial to our sports-medicine program.”
McKenzie added, “The old tables were very old and unstable, causing us to be nervous at times when caring for our athletes.”
The new taping tables will provide a better place to tape athletes, which is done to prevent injury or add stability to a healing injury. Additionally, the new equipment adds storage space to the athletic training facility and is more aesthetically pleasing.
In every way, the new equipment will be an upgrade when sports begin in the coming weeks.
“It is now set up and ready to go in time for the fall sports season,” said Jim Cannon, a spokesman for PVHC. “We’re all excited for this great upgrade for our student athletes and for enhancing the great work that Alan [Hill] does.”
