In a time where standing 6 feet from others is widely encouraged, the Powell High School cross country team is doing its part in keeping a good distance — from competitors.
The Panthers’ boys’ and girls’ teams both took first at the Rocky Mountain Cross Country meet in Lovell on Monday, besting Lovell and Rocky Mountain at the event. The boys’ team tallied 13 event points — 19 better than Lovell’s score of 32 — and the girls’ squad logged 14 points, compared to Lovell’s 25.
Senior Joey Hernandez took first place with a time of 18:42. Close behind, Daniel Merritt’s time of 18:56 was good for second.
Three other Panthers posted times under 20 minutes: Chance Franks, Riley Schiller and Cole Frank, who finished fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Riley McKeen also cracked the top 10 with an eighth-place finish, while Colton Decker and Ethan Thiel both recorded season-best times and Justin Hobbs ran a personal best.
For the girls, Kabrie Cannon once again took home the gold with a time of 22:08. She took first place by more than a minute, with teammate Gabby Thomas finishing second at 23:22.
Meaghan McKeen also finished in the top five with a time of 24:38. Senior Jozi Simpson rounded out the Panthers’ scorers, finishing seventh with a time of 25:52.
PHS cross country coach Ashley Hildebrand said she was impressed with the team’s performance, considering they competed just two days prior at the Michelle Ludwig Invitational in Sheridan.
The Panthers will vie to stay fresh at the Worland Invite today (Thursday), starting at 4 p.m.
