PHS JV splits games vs. Rocky Mountain, Shoshoni

Powell High School JV basketball returned from winter break with a loss but quickly bounced back the next time out.

Against Rocky Mountain, on Saturday, Jan. 9, the Panthers lost 56-46 on the road in Cowley. It was the Panthers’ first game since returning from a two-week hiatus, and coach Waleryan Wisniewski thinks rust played a factor in the outcome.

“I feel that was exactly the case for our team,” Wisniewski said. “We missed easy shots that we normally make, did not shoot well from the free-throw line, and, at times, could have been more aggressive offensively attacking the basket. We got behind early and couldn’t make the plays that were needed down the stretch to recover.”

In the fourth quarter, however, PHS showed grit and shrunk the deficit to one point. Though the Panthers were unable to steal a victory, the coach said the team’s persistence was impressive.

“The boys in our program top to bottom are fighters and will continue to fight to the end,” Wisniewski said.

In defeat, Toran Graham led the squad with 11 points, and Gunnar Erickson also reached double figures with 10.

The next game, however, PHS returned to form. Powell cruised to a 61-24 win over Shoshoni, improving to 4-2 overall.

“It was nice for us to bounce back against Shoshoni and get a win,” Wisniewski said. “I thought that we were able to fix some things that week and were more proficient in our execution throughout the game.

The coach noted more energy from his squad against the Wranglers, which allowed the Panthers to sustain such a large margin.

“I felt like we played with a lot of intensity, and I look forward to this carrying over into the rest of our games in the future,” Wisniewski said.

This time, Keaton Rowton’s 10 points were a team high, while Brock Johnson added nine. Of the 12 players who dressed out, 11 ended up in the scorebook.

Since then, the JV squad took down Meeteetse’s varsity squad on Monday, 57-47. Stats and quotes from that contest will be in an edition in the coming weeks.

Next up for the team is a road game against Worland Friday, with the game slated to begin at 4 p.m.
