Riding a strong third quarter, the Powell High School girls junior varsity basketball team rallied to beat Lovell at home on Friday, 38-36.

After dropping their first three games of the season, the Powell girls have won five of eight to put their record at 5-6 overall.

“Lovell has a nice group of freshmen and sophomores and they played well again against us,” said PHS JV coach Troy Hildebrand. “It took a good game from us across the board to get this win.”

The Bulldogs led 19-15 at halftime, but PHS took the lead for good with a 12-6 third period.

“Rylynn Valdez scored six of her seven points early in the third quarter to help us erase that halftime deficit and get the team moving in the right direction,” Hildebrand said. Abi Urbach then “took over in the fourth quarter, scoring eight of her 10 points in that period to hold off a late Lovell charge,” the coach said.

In her first game with the JV squad, freshman Kami Jensen “provided a great spark on the defensive end,” Hildebrand said. “She had a number of steals that she converted into easy layups for 10 big points.”

Maddie Campbell added five points in two quarters, Addison Braten had four and Megan Jacobsen two.
