Powell varsity girls’ basketball returned to the hardwood over the weekend, playing contests against Cody and Rocky Mountain. The Panthers dropped both games, moving their overall record to 1-3.
Cody set the tone early in Thursday’s game, with the Fillies opening a 23-0 lead. PHS broke the scoreless start with a bucket from Addy Thorington with 3:43 left in the second quarter.
After halftime, the Panthers saw improvement, outscoring Cody 6-4 in the third quarter. But at that point, the deficit was too great and Cody eventually won 43-17.
Finding an offensive rhythm was a struggle for PHS against Cody, with the team shooting just above 25% from the field. Senior Rose Graft was Powell’s leading scorer with six points. Hailee Hyde and Thorington added five and four, respectively.
Two days later, however, Powell put up a much stronger effort. The Panthers fell 43-32 at home to an undefeated Rocky Mountain squad, seeing much better play on both sides of the ball.
PHS trailed by just nine at halftime, but a scoreless third quarter ultimately cost the Panthers the contest. Though Powell outscored the Grizzlies 13-4 in the final eight minutes, the deficit after the third quarter was too large, and it ended as an 11-point game.
Thorington, who scored eight points, was Powell’s leading scorer. Others who made two or more field goals were Graft, Hyde, Maddie Campbell and Madi Fields.
Following Christmas break, the team’s next game is on Saturday, Jan. 9 against Rocky Mountain, this time on the road.
