After four weekends of regular season competition, Powell High School played in the Class 3A West Conference golf tournament on Friday. The Panthers played host for the event, with Cody, Star Valley, Lovell, Pinedale, Lander, Lyman and Green River also participating.
The Powell boys finished in a tie for third place with Lovell, with a total score of 380.
Individually, PHS senior George Higgins finished third individually, scoring an 82. Higgins has consistently scored in the 70s and 80s throughout the season and “did exactly what he has been doing all fall,” according to head coach Troy Hildebrand.
Gunnar Erickson, a freshman, had the Panthers’ second-best score at 94. Erickson’s scores have steadily improved over the season, and “his thinking of the game and mental approach to each round is a real strength for him,” the coach said.
Another freshman, Isaiah Woyak, has developed over his first season, shooting 97 at conference.
“He [Woyak] has worked hard on the physical parts of his game but more than anything, his improved play can be directly tied to an increase in his confidence and the ability to work through tough times in his rounds,” Hildebrand said.
Andrew Jones, another PHS freshman at the event, logged a 103. Hildebrand said he expects to see Jones’ scores break into the 90s very soon.
Senior Yogi Sullivan shot 111 on Friday. The veteran has been a vocal leader on the team since joining and “has always been a player that other kids like to be paired with,” the coach said.
At 119, sophomore Steven Stambaugh “battled throughout his entire round but just wasn’t really ever able to get anything positive going,” Hildebrand said. Despite a tough outing, Hildebrand noted Stambaugh’s growth in year two of high school golf.
Powell’s lone girl in the tournament, senior Maddi Hackenberg, posted a personal-best score of 113. That was also a massive 27-stroke improvement from the prior weekend in Buffalo.
Hackenberg is playing in her first year of competitive golf, and “has really made the best of this opportunity,” Hildebrand said.
The Panthers will wrap up the 2020 season on Friday and Saturday at the Class 3A state tournament in Evanston.
