After a quick home dual Thursday with Cody, which featured three bouts, the Powell Panther girls’ wrestling team is set to head to the regional tournament this weekend to kick off postseason action.
In those three bouts at home, two featured Ellidi Joy, who fell to Louella Cornell with one second remaining in the first period at 155 pounds before losing to Ashten Hubbs at 170 pounds in 18 seconds.
The other bout of the evening featured Panther Harley Spinden against Teagan Rakisits at 120 pounds, with Rakisits getting the better of Spinden with a pin in 31 seconds.
Following those bouts, the Panthers are now set to head to Evanston, taking part in the 4A West Regional Tournament.
“We are just working on staying sharp before regionals. We do not want to get rusty,” coach David Holland said. “Our goal is for each girl to punch their ticket to state. I told them do not worry about putting pressure on yourselves by feeling like you have to make the finals, the main goal for regionals is to earn that path to state.”
Since there are no classifications yet for girls’ wrestling, there will be more than 25 teams competing at the regional tournament, with eight wrestlers advancing per division to the state tournament in Casper.
The regional tournament will begin on Friday and will conclude Saturday. The state tournament is set to begin Thursday, Feb. 27 in Casper.
