PHS girls kick off conference 2-0

Staying at home to start out conference play the Powell Panther girls’ soccer team found its scoring touch on Thursday and Friday — defeating a pair of Uinta County opponents. Powell took down Mountain View 4-1 and won a high scoring affair 7-5 over Lyman, with freshman Ivy Agee leading the way with six goals and four assists in the two games.

Kicking off the action the Panthers (2-1 overall, 2-0 3A West) welcomed a ranked opponent to town, matching up with No. 3 Mountain View (0-3 overall, 0-3 3A West) on Thursday.

Early on, the Panthers took advantage of a tailwind, taking long shots and challenging the Mountain View keeper.

Unfortunately for Powell, many of those shots carried just over or found the post — keeping the score tied 0-0 for a majority of the half.

Coy Erickson broke the deadlock with five minutes left, giving Powell its first goal of the season.

That lead instantly grew, as Agee stole the ball off the kickoff, maneuvering her way through the Mountain View defense and scoring less than 10 seconds later to double the advantage to 2-0.

“That first goal was so important as it gave the ladies confidence in the fact that they could score,” coach Danny Agee said. “We had so many good things in that first game and half without seeing it come to fruition and that can be difficult to handle for long. You could see the impact it had on the ladies as soon as it happened — especially with the second goal coming only 10 seconds later.”

Those two goals held for Powell heading into the halftime break.

Early on in the second half the Buffalos created more opportunities with the wind at their back, attempting to cut into the lead.

Mountain View got its goal on a free kick just outside the box with 28 minutes left, making the score 2-1.

Just two minutes later Agee got her second, launching a deep shot that the wind helped drop in over the Mountain View keeper to extend the lead back out to 3-1.

Powell sealed the game four minutes later after Kenna Cannon finished off a strong attacking play to help the Panthers walk away with the 4-1 victory.

Jaedyn Hampton finished with seven saves for the Panthers.

POWELL 7, LYMAN 5

Slightly warmer temperatures greeted the Panthers on Friday, as Powell looked to start the conference slate 2-0 for the first time since the 2018 season against the Eagles (0-2 overall, 0-2 3A West).

Powell got on the board first on a long-distance shot from Emily Orr just over four minutes in to help give Powell the quick 1-0 lead.

Agee continued her scoring streak, finding the back of the net directly off a corner kick — sneaking the ball in under the Eagle’s keeper at the near post to make it 2-0 after just 6:30.

Lyman got on the board with a corner kick of its own, scoring on a header at the near post to cut the lead down to 2-1 just two minutes later.

Erickson got her second goal of the weekend, scoring two minutes later on a header off a corner kick to make it 3-1.

Powell continued to hold possession and dictate the pace for most of the first half, but Lyman got two goals on counterattacks with 22 minutes left and seven minutes left to tie the game at 3-3.

Agee responded again just a minute later, scoring her second of the day to regain the lead for Powell.

That 4-3 lead held going into halftime for the Panthers.

Starting out the second half Agee completed her hat-trick, finding the back of the net just three minutes in to give Powell a two-goal advantage.

Jordyn Dearcorn got on the Panther scoresheet 12 minutes into the half, helping give Powell breathing room with a three goal advantage.

Lyman did not go away, scoring another pair of goals with 22:30 left and 17 minutes left to put Powell on its heels over the final portion of the game.

“It was tough seeing those goals go in on Friday; however, the ladies kept working hard and in the end got the job done,” coach Agee said. “We are just going to continue to work on our positioning and decision making and hopefully we’ll see an improvement in those areas over the next game or two.”

Powell went in search of a game-sealing goal late, and got it when Agee scored her fourth from 25 yards out to help seal the 7-5 win for the Panthers.

The final goal for the Panthers helped Powell surpass its goal total from a year ago, reaching halfway to its win total in the process.

“These wins really helped boost the ladies emotionally, and that is a major factor in any team’s success,” coach Agee said. “We hope the ladies learn that they are deserving of going to state and as long as they put in the work and stay focused on our roles on the field the rest will fall into place.”

DIFFICULT MATCHUP

Powell is now scheduled to head to Cody next Wednesday, April 12, at 2 p.m. to take on the defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Fillies (4-0 overall, 3-0 3A West).

“[Next Wednesday] is going to be a tough game. Cody is a good team with a lot of strong players that have a history of winning, but this is good for us,” Agee said. “We are coming together well and playing a team like Cody will not only show us what we need to work on but will also give us an accurate assessment of what we are doing well.”

He said that he and assistant coach Callee Erickson know the team will do its best and will work hard win or lose while continuing to move forward and keep building.

Powell was originally scheduled to play Cody on Tuesday (today), but inclement weather in Cody scheduled for Monday night into Tuesday forced a change of schedule and pushed the game to next week.
