PHS boys win opening meet

Three qualify for state

Conditions held out just long enough for the Powell Panther boys’ track and field team to open the season, as the Panthers made the most of their first opportunity and took the team title at the Burlington Invite on Friday.

“The boys did a great job all throughout the events, especially considering how young we are,” coach Scott Smith said. “I really liked the way they came out and competed.”

The Panthers had one lone victor in Burlington, as Liam Taylor claimed the top spot in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 5.07 seconds.

Despite only one winner the Panthers had a host of top finishes to take the team title, as Breckyn Kobbe took second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.59, qualifying for the state meet.

“It was good to see Breckyn get out to a fast start this season,” Smith said. “He has really improved in just one year and looks to have an even better future this season.”

In addition to Kobbe, Sawyer Wormald placed second in the 300 meter hurdles (44.19) and Karcher Foley took second in the long jump, leaping 19 feet, 11 3/4 inches.

Third place finishes belonged to Foley in the 200 meters (24.76), Lincoln Crawford in the 110 meter hurdles (16.96), and Braxton Nelson and Landon Hyde in the high jump, both clearing 6 feet.

Those two were the other Panther qualifiers for the state meet.

“Early season qualifiers are always great, but to see them jumping that well this early is really exciting,” Smith said.

Powell had one relay victory, as the quartet of Cobey Khan, Brayden Benander, Nelson and Kobbe won the 4x100 with a time of 46.88.

Other top five finishes included: Kobbe fourth in the 200 meters (25.11), Korbyn Warren fourth in the 800 meters (2:12.9), Michael Legerski fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (45.77), Crawford tied for fourth in the pole vault (11-0), Landon Smallwood and Brady Harvey tied for fourth in the shot put (40-0), Taylor fifth in the 1600 meters (4:51.09), Colin Walker fifth in the 3200 meters (11:06.28) and Wormald fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (18.07) and the triple jump (38-1).

Powell took the top spot with 146 points, 17.75 ahead of second place Thermopolis and 44.25 ahead of Lovell in third.

The Panthers now have a couple of weeks to prepare for their next meet, the LA Kohnke Invitational on April 12 at home.
