PHS alumni gathering to be scaled back

Gerry Wilkins, a member of the Powell High School Alumni Association board, wants to keep the string of 105 consecutive all-class reunions alive.

The COVID-19 pandemic is throwing a big curve into planning, but Wilkins (PHS Class of 1968) says at least a skinnied down version the 105th reunion will go forward July 10-11.

“We always respect everyone’s decisions, so we’ll see some of you there, and we’ll see some of you next year,” Wilkins said in his latest reunion communique.

The Saturday morning breakfast hosted by the Powell Rotary Club, a staple of previous reunions, will not be held this year. The alumni golf tournament on Friday, July 10 is on.

Friday night individual class reunions are dwindling. The 30-year Class of 1990 had previously announced that it will wait a year. The 40, 50 and 60-year classes have similarly set this year’s reunions aside.

“We sent a group email asking classmates if they were still planning to come and if we should continue planning,” said Lynn Bennion of the 50-year Class of 1970. “Many of the travelers said they weren’t planning on it now. We decided to postpone.”

Janelle Cline of the 40-year Class of 1980 expressed the same concerns.

“There just weren’t enough people able to travel,” she said. Instead, “We’re going to try and do a quick book online.”

The 60-year Class of 1960 made the same decision.

“We’re not going to try it” in the face of the spreading virus, said Nancy Hall. “We’ll decide later if we have it [the 60th reunion] next year or just wait.”

Alumni are planning to drag Main on Friday, July 10, gathering at around 7 p.m. at the old Powell High School location on Evarts Street. Then on Saturday morning, the Northwest College Alumni Association will host the Trapper Classic Car Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in conjunction with the PHS reunion weekend. NWC and PHS alumni are invited to join the car show, which is free to the public (see related story).

Wilkins said the no-host, noon-in-the-park event is on for Saturday, July 11, while the Saturday evening at the fairgrounds is being scaled back to “just a get-together chat time over a beer.”
