The Powell High School boys’ swimming and diving team opened the 2020-21 season over the weekend, competing Friday and Saturday in events in Cody and Buffalo, respectively.
At the Cody Tri Invite, hosted at the Cody Rec Center, the Panthers placed second, logging 65 points as a team. Worland won the event with 78 points.
Powell saw four first-place finishes of the 12 events. Winners were Jon Hawley (1-meter six dives), Ru Parker (100 free) and Nate Johnston (500 free, 100 breast).
The next day, PHS earned another second-place team finish at the Buffalo Triangular. At this event, the Panthers didn’t finish first in any races but finished second in seven.
Between the Panthers’ first two events, six athletes became state qualifiers. Those were Hawley (diving), Johnston (50 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 breast and 100 fly), Parker (50 free, 100 free, 100 back and 100 fly), Kobus Diver (500 free), Francis Rogers (100 breast and 100 fly) and Gabe Rose (100 fly).
Coaches Stephanie Warren and Jerry Rodriguez said they’re more concerned with qualifiers and improving times, rather than team scoring at this point in the season.
The Panthers will compete next Saturday in a meet hosted at Riverton. The competition is set to begin at 10 a.m.
