Hosting its biggest meet of the season, the Powell Panther girls’ swim team battled against five other teams at the Gene Dozah Invitational on Saturday, squaring off with every 3A North team apart from Douglas.
The Panthers finished tied for fourth (193 points) with the only south team in attendance, Kemmerer. Cody took the title by a significant margin with 342 points.
Leading the way for Powell was Patricia Christensen, who won the 200 IM with a time of 2:35.34 and the 100 back in 1:04.81.
In addition to those two, Christensen was the leadoff leg of 30.45 seconds with the backstroke in the 200 medley relay as the Panthers placed second in 2:16.99.
“That was her personal best and faster than her lead off swim at last year’s state meet when she was suited and fully rested,” coach Bob Smartt said.
The other three swimmers in the medley relay included Anika Anderson, Addy Powell and Samantha Young.
Powell also had a winner in Kaitlin Diver, who claimed the top spot in the 500 free (5:48.9) while placing second in the 200 free (2:12.35).
Powell was the third Panther to earn a top spot, placing second in the 100 fly (1:14.42) and fourth in the 100 back (1:12.8).
Other top eight finishers for the Panthers included Anderson placing sixth in the 100 breast (1:31.07) and seventh in the 200 IM (3:00.97), while Young placed eighth in the 100 fly (1:29.17).
The 400 free relay team of Diver, Christensen, Powell and Tempie Day placed third with a time of 4:26.12.
Powell and Kemmerer were just behind Worland in third with 196. Buffalo was second with 224 points while Newcastle was sixth with 102 points.
After hosting the Gene Dozah the Panthers will take most of this week to prepare before heading to Riverton on Saturday for an invitational.
