Panthers finish first in Riverton quad

A week after finishing second in back-to-back events, Powell High School boys’ swimming finished first as a team Saturday at the Riverton Quad.

The Panthers earned 112 team points, which was far ahead of second-place Lyman, which tallied 83. Nearly the entire PHS team competed, opposed to the first two meets (in Cody and Worland), where only a smaller group of swimmers could attend.

“We were very glad to have almost the complete team there,” head coach Stephanie Warren said. “Having most of them also helps motivate all of them. They are great at encouraging each other and cheering each other along.”

In four events, Powell placed first. Winners included Nate Johnston (200 individual medley), Ru Parker (100 fly), Tarren Blackmore (100 breast) and the 200 medley relay team of Johnston, Parker, Blackmore and Francis Rogers.

Four Panthers became state qualifiers on Saturday: Tarren Blackmore (50 free, 100 breast), Ben Hawley (1-meter six dives), Ashtin Prentiss (1-meter six dives) and Josh Wright (100 back).

Athletes who set personal-best times were Nathan Fuller (200 free), Caiden Gerhts (50 free), Gabe Rose (100 fly), Kobus Diver (100 free) and Kyler Warren (100 free).

After a two-week holiday break, the Panthers will return to the pool on Friday, Jan. 8 with a meet at home.

“I hope after break we are all able to return for the first home meet we will have,” Warren said.
