A Park County rivalry saw plenty of close matches on the court Tuesday evening, with the Cody Fillies and Broncs getting the best of the Powell Panther boys’ and girls’ tennis teams 4-1 in conference matches.
“That’s a solid team over there in Cody,” coach Joe Asay said. “It was good to see all the kids play really well.”
BOYS
CODY 4, POWELL 1
Making the quick trip over to Cody on Tuesday, the Panthers and Broncs were back and forth in tight battles across the board.
One of the closest came at No. 1 singles, where Nathan Preator and Nick Stewart were locked in a more than 2-1/2 hour match.
Preator took a close first set that went into a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5).
Stewart took the second set 1-6 before a close third set separated by one breakpoint went Stewart’s way 4-6.
“Nathan played some great tennis,” Asay said. “He really pushed Nick, they battled all the way up until 9 p.m. A good match under the lights.”
At No. 2 singles, Trevion Solberg fell to Logan Hall 2-6, 0-6.
No. 1 doubles saw Taeson Schultz and Ryan Barrus battle against Carter Thompson and Zach Schwab, with Schultz and Barrus battling in a close second set 5-7 after losing the first set 1-6.
The lone win for the Panther boys came at No. 2 doubles, where a close contest ensued between Isaac Stensing and Alex Watts against Wesley Law and Cole McCloud.
Stensing and Watts battled to a 6-4 win in the first set before pulling out a come-from-behind win 7-6 (8-6) in the second.
“A good straight set win there,” Asay said. “They needed to get some breaks back to get to 6-6 in the second and finished in the tiebreaker.”
Another close match came at No. 3 doubles, where Memphis Solberg and Calvin Opps were edged out by Isaac Wood and Bryson Liang 2-6, 5-7.
GIRLS
CODY 4, POWELL 1
Some more close matches came on the girls’ side, starting at No. 1 singles.
Naomi Whipple battled Noelle Graham, with Whipple returning to the court after resting against Torrington.
Whipple lost by identical scores, falling 4-6 in each set.
“Naomi had a great match coming back in that spot against Noelle,” Asay said.
Sophie Czirr stepped back into the No. 2 singles role for the Panthers, but came up short against Brenna Foote 2-6, 1-6.
At No. 1 doubles, the Panther duo of Kyra Morrow and Anneliese Petersen dropped sets to Alyssa Despain and Natalie Wenke 3-6, 2-6.
Isabelle Urbach and Elaina Kousoulos battled at No. 2 doubles against Hailey Dansie and Ellie Wassink, before falling after a close first set 4-6, 1-6.
The one victory for Powell came at No. 3 doubles, as Bailee Allred and Ava Stearns cruised in the first set against Storie McGonagle and Isabelle Paddock 6-2 before battling back to a 7-5 second set win.
“It was good to see them come from behind and get a win,” Asay said.
CASPER MATCHES
Powell now heads on the road for the final matches of the regular season, making the trip to Casper on Saturday to take on the Casper schools.
The Panthers will take on Kelly Walsh at 10 a.m. and Natrona County at 2 p.m.
“Always look forward to competing with those kids down there,” Asay said. “There’s always some really good tennis with the KW kids and some good matches with the NC kids.”
