Panthers eke out dual win

State tournament rapidly approaching

Three competitions stand in between the Panther swim team and the conference meet at the start of February. They finished their home schedule with a Saturday dual against Worland, edging out the visiting Warriors 94-92.

The Powell High School squad added two new state meet qualifiers, with junior David Polson and senior Riley Schiller joining the growing list.

Polson put on his best performance in the 500 free, swimming a 36 second final leg to cap off a 12 1/2 second reduction in his time. He posted a time of 6:05.80 to qualify and finish third.

“That was the best swim that we have ever seen from him,” Panther head coach Stephanie Warren said of Polson. “He was focused, zoned in and wanted to get qualified and went well under the qualifying time.”

Schiller was able to get his qualifying time in the 100 fly — touching the wall a full second ahead of the qualifying mark in 1:09.91 to take third.

Warren said she’d been waiting for Schiller to qualify for awhile.

“It was great to see him get qualified too,” Warren said of the senior. “We knew he could do it and we were just waiting on the right swim. Hopefully he can get qualified in other events before state.”

Individual event winners for the meet included senior Kyler Warren in the 200 free (with a time of 2:21.88), senior Nate Johnston in the 200 IM (2:06.42) and junior Kobus Diver in the 500 free (5:42.37).

The team of junior Rui Parker, senior Francis Rogers, senior Cole Frank and Johnston took first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:51.70, and the team of junior Ashtin Prentiss, freshman Cole Fauskee, Warren and senior Caiden Gerhts took first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:49.89.

A smaller meet allowed Powell to expand the schedule and change the diving competition to 11 dives, which is what they will experience at state in just over three weeks.

The Panthers had four out of the top five divers. Frank took second with a score of 311.40, Prentiss took third with a 305.65, freshman Taggart Shumway took fourth with a 282.75 and senior Caiden Gerhts took fifth with a 259.45.

“Lander was also supposed to be an 11 dive meet also, but with so many teams there we decided it was going to take a really long time, so we were able to throw 11 dives here,” Warren said. “That was really good for us before going to Gillette on Saturday, as they will do 11 dives there as well.”

Other top finishers included Parker (second in the 200 IM with a 2:16.34), Diver (second in the 50 free with a 26.13), Johnston (second in the 100 fly with a 1:00.53), Warren (third in the 100 free with a 1:00.30), Rogers (second in the 500 free with a 6:05.80) and junior Aidan Cannizzaro (third in the 100 back with a 1:08.64).

The end of the season is fast approaching but that does not mean the schedule is slowing down for the Panthers.

Powell is set to head to Worland today (Tuesday) for a triangular with Worland and Cody. They will then travel to Buffalo on Friday to take on the Bison in a dual before heading to Gillette on Saturday to participate in an invitational featuring both 3A and 4A competitors.

Next weekend, the Panthers head to Douglas for the 3A north conference, followed by a last chance meet ahead of state. Warren hopes that some freshmen and older swimmers who are close to state times will be able to qualify.

The Panthers currently have 14 qualifiers. Cannizzaro’s time of 1:08.45 in the 100 back at a Jan. 18 contest in Cody was initially believed to be a qualifying time, due to a printing error in the Cody program; however, the state qualifying time is actually 1:08.00, so Cannizzaro is still working to qualify.
