Panthers defeat Lovell by 11 at home

Powell’s boys trailed early but righted their ship in time to earn a 41-30 victory over the Lovell Bulldogs Friday in the Panther Gym.

Landon Lengfelder got the Panthers (7-6 overall, 1-2 in Class 3A Northwest) started with an offensive rebound stick-back bucket; Adrian Geller added two when he scored after a circus assist from Mason Marchant.

The Bulldogs (3-11, 0-3) grabbed a 9-8 advantage after a three fell, but Lengfelder scored a 3-pointer of his own in answer. Not to be outdone Lovell canned another trey in the final seconds and held a one-point lead after one period of play, 12-11.

But the roof caved in during a second quarter in which the Panthers put up 11 to just three for the visitors and moved away at halftime, 22-15.

Coach Chase Kistler’s squad outscored Lovell 8-2 in the third and the die was cast for Powell — up 30-17 with eight minutes left.

“My overall thought of the Lovell game was that we dropped our turnovers and held them to 30 points or less. I felt like we had a great week of practice and improved even if just a little in the areas that we need to get better at,” said Kistler. “Lovell’s zone defense is really good at swarming to the ball and can cause a team to settle for easy shots, but I felt we were patient and took high percentage shots and our defense played extremely well.”

Lengfelder was the top point-getter with 13, nine of which came from 3-point range. Marchant scored 11 with four assists.

Jesse Brown pulled down seven rebounds while Marchant, Geller and Lengfelder were charted with four steals apiece. The Panthers shot 50 percent from the free throw line, going 8-for-16.

Powell visits Pinedale (5-11) at 5 p.m. Friday and Big Piney (11-4) Saturday at 1 p.m. on a twin-bill road trip.
