On Saturday, Powell cross country competed in the Berry Bryant/Kyle Johnson Memorial Cross Country Meet in Riverton.

The girls’ team finished in fifth place, while the boys finished sixth.

Kabrie Cannon was once again the Panthers’ top runner, recording a time of 21:05.1 for third place. PHS head coach Ashley Hildebrand said that Cannon “has been consistently strong in these first three races of the season and I think we will see her drop down into the 20s soon.”

Three other girls — Madelyn Horton, Mary Shopa and Gabby Thomas — finished in the top 30. Horton’s time of 24:13.1 was her personal best.

“I look to see her bring that time down even more as the season progresses,” Hildebrand said.

On the boys’ side, Daniel Merritt’s time of 17:31.6 was his career best and the fifth-best time in the event. Merritt’s performance was the best in the meet’s early session, which featured Cody, Green River and Natrona County High School from Casper.

“He [Merritt] ran a really smart race by starting conservatively and then taking the lead early on. However he didn’t have anyone to run with or chase for much of the race,” Hildebrand said. “Had he been able to race with the Lander boys, who ran in the second event of the day, I believe he would have run a much faster time.”

Despite battling a side ache for much of the race, Joey Hernandez cracked the top 15 with a time of 18:33.4. Chance Franks took 25th in 19:10.20.

“While our varsity boys team did not place very high overall, I think that will start to change as everyone gets healthy,” the coach said. “We have a great group of boys who work really hard in practice and have amazing potential.”
