Panther wrestling continues success as postseason nears

Powell High School’s wrestlers had a busy week, competing in five duals. Two took place Thursday for the Panthers’ last home event of the 2020-21 season, while PHS competed in three duals on Saturday.

At home, the Panthers were dominant: PHS cruised to wins over Thermopolis (60-18) and Riverton (51-30).

“We wrestled really well Thursday,” head coach Nick Fulton said. “It was good to see us being aggressive and taking it to guys. We had been struggling at home, so it was good to see us end our last home stand on a high note.”

Seth Horton, a senior, was the standout for the Panthers, according to Fulton. Horton pinned Thermopolis’ Roedy Farrell, a 2020 state finalist, in 4:48.

Late last month, the Panthers had edged out a win against Riverton, but Thursday’s victory was much more lopsided.

“I don’t know what happened; we hammered them pretty good,” Fulton said.

On Saturday, PHS showed up shorthanded to the Mustang Duals in Casper, due to injuries, sickness and ACT testing. Though the Panthers lost duals to Evanston, Rock Springs and Green River — by scores of 51-27, 47-28 and 65-9, respectively — Fulton was still pleased with his squad’s performance.

“I wasn’t overly concerned with the dual scores,” the coach said. “We didn’t wrestle poorly. We won some good ones, lost some good ones.”

Stetson Davis was one performer who stood out to the coach, finishing Saturday 3-0 individually.

“He [Davis] wrestled hard and was taking good shots,” Fulton said. “I hope he can build on that.”

Horton also went 3-0 at the Mustang Duals.

The Panthers have a couple weeks remaining before regionals — the start of postseason competition. While the coaching will change slightly as state gets closer, Fulton’s message will not.

“Our focus is narrowing, but we’re still looking to get a little bit better,” Fulton said. “It will be more individualized going forward, focusing on each kid’s little things. Just tweak a few things here and there and continue to get better.”

The Panthers are set to travel to Cody today (Tuesday) for a 5 p.m. triangular before heading to Buffalo on Saturday for an 11 a.m. quad.
