A series of home duals started off rough for the Powell High School wrestling team on Saturday — and head coach Nick Fulton will be the first to admit that.

The Panthers opened the day with a dual against Star Valley, one of the best programs in the state. PHS failed to win a match, with the Braves taking the contest 78-0.

“We showed them way too much respect,” Fulton said. “It was a rough dual, we didn’t wrestle very tough, and I expected that we’d compete. I was pretty disappointed with that, and the kids felt that a little bit as well.”

As the day progressed, however, the Panthers showed more fight.

Against Moorcroft — a perennial strong wrestling squad — PHS won four of five varsity matches and took the dual 24-6. Fulton said he was “happy with the rebound there,” saying that the team performed “all right.”

In their third dual, the Panthers fell to Worland 54-30, but put together a much stronger showing than the opening loss.

“Worland is a really good team, and we competed really well,” Fulton said. “It was a lot better than against Star Valley, and we had some really good performances.”

The coach singled out senior Emma Karhu as an individual who competed exceptionally against Worland. She pinned Kyle Anderson — who defeated her at state last year — in 5:06.

Mikey Timmons also “showed a lot of fight” and “competed hard,” according to Fulton. Timmons picked up wins in the Moorcroft and Worland duals.

The Panthers take the mat this (Tuesday) evening, hosting Cody for a senior-night dual.

“It should be a good dual,” Fulton said. “We’re excited to get a true home dual format. Win, lose or draw, we have to compete in these situations.”
