The Powell High School volleyball team got the season off to a solid start over the weekend at the McDonald’s Classic in Riverton, winning three of seven matches at the two-day tournament Friday and Saturday.
“I thought it was a good opener for the season,” said PHS head coach Tasha Miller. “We were able to see teams that we will play in our conference, at regionals and some good 4A teams that challenged us to compete even harder.”
Powell opened the tournament Friday with back-to-back losses to Pinedale (21-10, 21-16) and Worland (21-8, 21-8), but bounced back to beat Wyoming Indian in three sets (21-19, 15-21, 15-10). The Lady Panthers closed out Friday’s action with a three-set win over Sheridan, 21-17, 13-21, 15-14.
Powell began Saturday with two-set losses to host team Riverton (21-14, 21-8) and Cody (21-15, 21-13), but battled back with a straight-set win over Big Piney 21-14, 21-11.
“We started off kind of slow and weren’t ready for the different level of play, at first,” Miller said. “By the time we had our last game of the evening on Friday against Sheridan, the girls finally turned it on and played awesome. It was an intense game, and they played with such energy and confidence. It was so encouraging to see that level of play on the court, I know we will go far this season if we can continue with that.”
As for what was working for the Lady Panthers, Miller said her young team continued to gain confidence as the tournament progressed.
“We had some good passes out of the back row from our libero, Michele Wagner, that allowed our setters to make some connections with our front row,” said the first-year head coach. “Kady Wells also stepped up and played full rotation for us, which is a new position for her since she has been primarily a back row player for her whole high school career. She played outside and led the team in kills over the weekend.”
The Lady Panthers will travel to Cody this weekend for the Montana/Wyoming Border Wars Tournament, beginning Friday at noon. Miller said she’d like to see the team tweak a few things before heading into the tourney.
“I’m excited to see the girls improve on their communication and the little things that we have worked hard on this week to improve playing smarter on the court and more intentional,” she said.
