Panther track and field competes at Sheridan

Posted

After last week’s home track and field invitational was canceled due to inclement weather, the Powell High School team opted to compete at the Dan Hansen Invitational in Sheridan on Saturday.

The Panthers sent fewer athletes to this event than the three meets in previous weeks and didn’t compete in relay events. They finished fifth as a team in the boys’ division and seventh in the girls’.

“We had some big improvement individually,” PHS head coach Scott Smith said. “We were selective in what events we had kids entered and were trying to see how specific things would work out. It was a big meet with great competition and our kids had a very good day.”

Hyrum Jeide was Powell’s only first-place finisher, winning the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.64. Jeide was also a standout in the hurdles in the prior week’s meets and has “really been improving,” per Smith.

Finishing fourth, freshman Waycee Harvey moved up to the No. 2 long jumper in PHS history, posting a distance of 16 feet, 10.5 inches. She also placed in the school’s top 15 in the 100, 200 and 400 dashes.

Several other Panthers finished near the top of the leaderboard in their events. On the girls’ side, Jenna Hillman (400), Megan Jacobsen (800) and Kenzie Ratcliff (high jump) were top-five finishers. And Eli Weimer (high jump), Cole Frank (high jump), Zeke Frankenberry (discus) and Toran Graham (shot put) placed in the top five for the boys.

The track teams compete in two meets in the coming days. This (Thursday) afternoon the Panthers will participate in another invitational in Sheridan and on Saturday, they will venture to Big Horn County for the Lovell Invitational.
