Panther swim team eyes another podium finish at 3A state meet

Posted

Weeks of hard work and dedication will come to a close as the Panther girls’ swim team puts its undefeated meet record on the line, heading to Gillette for the 3A state championships on Thursday and Friday.

To this point in the year, the Panthers have qualified 20 different athletes for the state meet: Baylee Brence, Charlee Brence, Kathryn Brence, Aramonie Brinkerhoff, Azurdey Burton, Abigail Casey, Aubree Fisher, Lilyan Halter, Dakota Hansen, Kik Hayano, Kami Jensen, Kylie Kahl, Sydney Legler, Emma Mitchell, Gabby Paterson, Colette Sanders, Grace Sapp, Paige Thomas, Croix Tryon and Taycee Walker.

As of last week, Panther swim coach Bob Smartt was unsure of which events each athlete would participate in at state, as those registrations are not due until Wednesday.

The Powell girls will look to take third as they did last year, or continue to improve; the team finished in fourth two years ago.

Smartt said he expects the Panthers will have a difficult time at state, as both Green River and Lander boast a handful of top talent in each event, as well as Douglas, which was the runner-up to the Panthers at the east regional meet.

Smartt said the team’s depth has enabled it to score so many points this season. However, scoring and winning at state comes down to the top talent.

He said the standout talent from both Green River and Lander is due to their swimmers participating in year-round swimming — something he hopes to incorporate more into the Panther swimming program to help it compete at the top for years to come.

Smartt said he is proud of how much his team has accomplished this season, as they have been able to accomplish an undefeated season to this point, despite the limited amount of time the team has swam together.

LAST CHANCE MEET

The Panthers traveled to Cody on Oct. 26 to participate in a last chance meet, as they looked to get an additional qualifier into the state meet.

While they were unable to gain any additional state qualifiers, there were 11 personal best performances at the meet:

• Kate Miller had a personal record (PR) 2:34.11 in the 200 free and a 1:09.94 in the 100 free.

• Rebekah Hendershot had a personal best 3:06.01 in the 200 free.

• Sydney Legler had personal bests in the 50 free with a 27.41 and a 1:08.77 in the 100 back.

• Charlee Brence finished with a PR of 28.79 in the 50 free.

• Brinly Casey had a PR of 32.37 in the 50 free.

• Yessenia Teague had PRs of 37.28 in the 50 free and 1:30.59 in the 100 free.

• Baylee Brence finished with a new PR of 1:02.43 in the 100 free.

• Paige Thomas came in with a new PR of 6:22.94 in the 500 free.

There were no placements or team scores kept at the event, which was solely set up as a way for additional athletes to qualify for the state meet.
