Panther girls turned away on road marathon

Facing three mountains to climb in just two days, the Powell girls basketball team couldn’t get over the top Friday and Saturday against Lander, Pinedale and Big Piney.

Those three games came on the heels of a Tuesday trip to Worland which made it a grueling four-game week for the Panthers.

Friday night, Lander had its way with the Panthers, 50-24.

The Powell boys and girls stayed in Lander Friday night to await the arrival of Pinedale and Big Piney for makeup games Saturday, postponed earlier in the season by weather.

Big Piney won 26-21 in a low-scoring game and Pinedale prevailed 53-43.

Lander

Lander’s defense held the Panther offense scoreless in the first period, taking a 17-0
advantage, and led at 27-8 at halftime. After 11 points separating the teams in the third quarter, Panthers played the Tigers within four, 16-12, in the fourth.

Rhoni Ferriss led the Tigers with 22 and Demi Stauffenberg added 12.

The Tigers canned eight 3-pointers to none for the Panthers. Powell got to the line only eight times and converted four. Lander hit eight of its 16 free throws.

Hailee Hyde led PHS with five points while Sidney O’Brien and Sabrina Shoopman pulled down five rebounds each among Powell’s 27.

Big Piney

Madi Fields led the Panthers with eight points against the Punchers of Big Piney in a game Powell led 11-1 at the end of the first quarter. The second eight minutes were a push at six points apiece, but in the second half, Powell managed only four while giving up 19 to Big Piney.

The Panthers got 12 points on four 3-pointers against the Punchers but hit only twice all night from 2-point range. They converted five of 10 chances at the line.

The Punchers hit eight times from two, once from three and were 7-13 at the line.

Pinedale

The Wranglers posted themselves to victory behind a 28-18 halftime cushion. Powell won the second half 25-24 but alas, the damage had been done.

Fields stepped up for 13 points against the Wranglers on four 3-pointers and a free throw. Hyde scored eight.

As a team Powell converted less than half their chances at the line, shooting 5-11. The Panthers’ other scoring came on an even dozen makes from two and a three from Maddie Campbell to make their total five from outside the arc.

Roxanne Rogers netted a Panther-killing 26 for Pinedale.

Next up for the Powell girls (3-15) is their regular-season finale on a road trip to Lovell this Friday. Two of their three wins have come against the Bulldogs. The regional tournament is Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 5-7 at Lyman High School.
