The Powell High School girls basketball team broke through for its first win of the season on Friday, opening the Big Horn Basin Classic Friday with a 33-31 win over Lovell.

To round out their tournament in Worland, the Panthers lost to Burlington later on Friday (49-38) and fell to Greybull (42-34) on Saturday.

Some last-second heroics spurred the Powell squad’s victory over Lovell’s Bulldogs. Freshman Maddie Campbell “came off Hailee Hyde’s ball screen and shot the ball with confidence,” which “zipped right in at the buzzer” to secure victory No. 1 on this season, said PHS head coach Chelsea Buher.

“It was a good win for us,” said Buher, who is “hoping we can continue to build on the positives from this weekend.”

The coach added that, “we still have plenty to work on, but we had more things we did right.”

That included better shooting, as the Panthers hit 44 percent of their shots against Lovell and nearly 46 percent of their shots against Greybull. PHS also cut down on turnovers against Lovell (with 23) and Burlington (20), before “we went back to our bad habits” and committed 35 turnovers against Greybull, Buher said.

“I felt like a couple opportunities got away from us when playing Burlington and Greybull,” Buher said. “Both teams play extremely hard and competed tenaciously.”

Playing against Class 3A Northwest Quadrant rival Lovell, the Panthers hit 15 of 34 field goal tries, all 2-pointers. Powell got itself to the line but four times in the game and hit three. Rebounds totaled 17, with all but five on the defensive end. No official blocks were credited to the Panthers, but Madi Fields and Sabrina Shoopman recorded four and three deflections.

Campbell led Powell with eight points, to which Paije Johnson added six and Hyde five

Against the Huskies of Burlington, Hyde and Fields led the Panther scoring with nine points each. Rose Graft added eight points and Karina Boreen six. Fields got all her points from 3-point range, where she hit 3 of 6 for 50 percent. Kortny Feller broke into double-digits on the glass where she ripped down a team-high 10 boards before fouling out. Powell shot just 7-of-15 at the line but profited by a block each from Sidney O’Brien and Graft.

On Saturday opposite Greybull, Hyde, Johnson and Fields paced Panther scoring with seven, six and five points, respectively. O’Brien and Rylynn Valdez netted four each and Shoopman three on a single 3-pointer. Fields found the range for her team’s other three in the game.

O’Brien led Powell rebounding with six of the team’s 17 boards. Graft was credited with three assists and lifted three steals.

“While we seemed to lead in every category [against Greybull], we came up short because we fell back into bad habits of 35 turnovers,” Buher said. “We will get back at focusing on turnovers and giving them more ‘live’ action in practice to hopefully continue to get that category down into a respectable number.”

The Panthers (1-8) meet Worland (7-4) Friday in the Panther gym.
