NWC women split games in Idaho

A tale of two games — that’s how Northwest College women’s basketball coach Camden Levett described the Trappers’ most recent weekend.

NWC went 1-1 at a tournament hosted at College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. After the split, Northwest is 2-3 overall.

The Trappers opened the weekend Thursday, Feb. 4, routing the CSI Legends 84-61.

They excelled offensively, shooting just below 50% from the field and converting on 55.6% of 3-point attempts. Sophomore Raquel Turner was NWC’s individual standout, notching 23 points on 5-of-5 shooting beyond the arc.

Though Turner was the top performer, Levett stressed the importance of the entire team’s effort in the lopsided win.

“It was more just team basketball,” Levett said.”Everyone was jelling, and we were playing at a high level.”

The tournament-opening game was NWC’s third of the season against “legends” teams, which primarily consist of a program’s former players. Some of the older players are still in basketball shape, while others just show up for fun.

Either way, these teams’ lack of organization can be difficult for their opponents.

“There’s no scouting reports on them,” Levett said. “We don’t have any more games against all-star teams, and we’re OK with that.”

Still, the Trappers were able to cruise to a win behind a 27-6 second quarter, which they built on in the second half. Northwest finished 2-1 against all-star teams this season.

The next game, however, was rough.

A late-second-quarter run from College of Southern Idaho helped the Golden Eagles cruise to a 79-47 win on Friday. CSI out-rebounded NWC 61-32 and held the Trappers to a 26.7% shooting clip from the field.

While CSI is one of the premier teams in NJCAA Division I, ranked No. 15 nationally, Levett felt like his team could have competed better.

“Things weren’t going our way, so we were forcing a lot of bad shots,” Levett said. “We kind of shut down and let them look like a really good team.”

Despite the 32-point margin, the coach singled out Hannah Harris as someone who played well.

“I was impressed with Hannah,” he said. “She hit a three in the third quarter, and it gave her a lot of confidence and gave me a lot of confidence in her.”

The Trappers were supposed to play three games in Twin Falls last week, being set to face Community Christian as well. However, Central Wyoming College had to back out of the CSI tournament due to a case of COVID-19, forcing teams to scramble to rearrange schedules. Levett ultimately agreed to scrap last weekend’s game against Community Christian in exchange for two home games against the school March 8-9. With the swap, NWC has a full, 22-game schedule and gets two extra games in Cabre Gym.

Before heading to Scottsbluff, Nebraska, for a three-game weekend, Northwest has one primary area to work on.

“Rebounding is going to be our focus in practice,” Levett said.

NWC begins the weekend today (Thursday) against Central Community College at 5:30 p.m.
