Heading on the road after an opening loss in Region IX North play, the Northwest College women’s basketball team defeated Eastern Wyoming 71-52 in Torrington on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

NORTHWEST 71, EASTERN WYOMING 52

The Trappers (14-8 overall, 1-1 Region IX North) hopped off the bus in Torrington after the long journey to the southeast portion of Wyoming, hoping for a fast start against the Lancers (4-15 overall, 0-2 Region IX North).

Jimena Montoro-Cabezas got the Trappers off on the right foot, scoring the first five points of the game to give Northwest the early lead.

The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the way, with the Trappers holding a 15-12 advantage after the first quarter.

Northwest maintained a single-digit lead for most of the second quarter, and briefly made it an 11-point game off a Darla Hernandez steal and score — but a basket at the buzzer cut the score to 34-25 in favor of the Trappers heading into the locker room.

“I think it took us a while to get going,” coach Lauren Davis said.

Eastern Wyoming cut the lead down to seven immediately to start the second, forcing a timeout from Davis.

The lead remained at seven or nine points for most of the third until the Lancers cut it down to three with three minutes left in the quarter.

Eastern continued its push and cut the lead to one point, but Northwest quickly transitioned into a 2-3 zone and regained a two possession lead going into the final frame up 49-43.

A 14-0 run over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter put the game in the Trappers’ control, quickly pushing the lead out to 20 over the Lancers.

Northwest pushed the lead out to as many as 22, and finished with a 71-52 victory — moving to 1-1 in Region IX North play.

“I think it says a lot that we can come out and get a road win after a long bus ride,” Davis said. “That was a team win and we had multiple people do great things.”

Hernandez led the Trappers with 25 points and eight rebounds, Roxanne Rogers finished with 15 points and five steals, while Montoro-Cabezas finished with 11 as the other Trapper in double figures.

HOME GAMES

Northwest returned home on Wednesday night to take on Laramie County Community College (15-5 overall, 1-1 Region IX North).

“It’s another opportunity to play in front of our home crowd,” Davis said. “Our goal is to win the rest of our home games this year so hopefully we can come out and do what we do best.”

That result was determined after the press deadline.

The Trappers continue Region IX play on Saturday at home, taking on Central Wyoming (2-16 overall, 0-2 Region IX North).

RESCHEDULED GAME

Northwest was originally scheduled to take on Western Wyoming (11-9 overall, 1-1 Region IX North) on Saturday, Jan. 28, but the original contest was postponed due to road closures.

That game has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, Feb. 8, with a 4 p.m. tipoff.
