The Powell and Cody animal shelters each received a $1,236 check this week, thanks to those who supported the fundraising efforts of the Sports Nuts of the Round Table.
Elfriede Milburn, president of the nonprofit group that runs the Powell shelter, said the organization was “overjoyed” with the generous donation.
“WOW, we love our Big Horn Basin community and we are happy they love us, too,” Milburn said, thanking donors for helping care for the shelter’s four- and sometimes three-legged friends.
“Park County is amazing!” she said.
The KODI-AM sports talk show’s “Nuts for Mutts” fundraiser was billed as a competition between the Park County Animal Shelter in Cody and the City of Powell/Caring for Powell Animals Shelter.
Sports nut Doug Blough led the campaign for the Powell shelter. Even though he’s from Cody, Blough has family members in Powell and a long-running column for the Powell Tribune — which he used to make a plea for funds.
Blough’s $1,537 fundraising total comfortably topped fellow nut Lincoln Reese’s $935, but in the end, the proceeds were split evenly between the two shelters.
However, it would be wrong to say the competition ended in a draw. Shortly after the checks from Big Horn Radio Network were presented to shelter representatives on Sunday, sports nut Ryan Brown directed Reese to don a dog costume and bear crawl around the bases at Ed Lynn Memorial Field.
“Luckily, we have a cold day for it,” Blough chortled amid the afternoon heat.
More seriously, he later offered on Facebook, “A big thank you to everyone that heeded my shameless solicitations and gave generously to us both — and more important, those animals that need all the help we can give them.”
