Northwest College welcomes in new faculty

Posted

Northwest College has a number of new faces this year, from administrators to custodians. Last Monday, President Lisa Watson spoke about and honored them for being a part of the college.

The Powell Tribune is highlighting new members of one group key to the success of the college, the faculty.

Andrey Goncalves

Music instructor

What is your educational history?

I did my undergrad in Brazilian music performance at the Espirito Santo Music College, in Brazil. I moved to the United States in 2012 to pursue my master’s in music performance. As I approached the end of my master’s program, my double bass teacher encouraged me to enroll in a doctoral program, and I did my Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance and Music Education at the University of Illinois.

What other jobs have you had in the field before this one?

I was a professor of double bass at Olivet Nazarene University and Eastern Illinois University for four years.

Where are you from?

I am from Vitória, an island on the east coast of Brazil.

What made you choose to come to Northwest College?

During my interview, I had the opportunity to meet the School of Music faculty, who are very talented people with a rich music background. Also, I loved witnessing the work ethics of the college. As soon as I finished my interview process, I knew I wanted to be part of this institution. I have been to many places in this country, and Powell is a beautiful place to develop a career.

 Ashley Love

Nursing instructor

What is your educational history?

Associate in nursing from Northwest College, bachelor’s in nursing from University of Wyoming, master’s in nursing education from Western Governors University, specialty certification in ambulatory care nursing from American Nurses Credentialing Center.

What other jobs have you had in the field before this one?

I worked as an RN at Powell Valley Healthcare and Billings Clinic Cody. Prior to coming to NWC full time I was an adjunct faculty for the nursing program.

Where are you from?

I have been in Powell since I was 5.

What made you choose to come to Northwest College?

NWC is where my nursing career started and after finding how much I enjoy nursing education I chose to pursue my advanced degree so I could come back and teach future nurses at the same program that gave me my start.

 Sue Norris

Math instructor

What is your educational history?

Bachelor’s in mathematics, physical science and education from Washington State University, master’s in statistics from University of Idaho.

What other jobs have you had in the field before this one?

High school teacher, Peninsula College, Washington; Wenatchee Valley College, Washington; Northwest College; Grinnell College; William Penn University and back to Northwest College. Teaching, institutional research and statistical consulting.

Where are you from?

Wheat farm in Washington.

What made you choose to come to Northwest College?

It was grand the first time so thought an encore would be fun.

Jorge Aponte

Fulbright language teaching assistant

My full name is Jorge Alberto Aponte. I am 29 years old, and I am originally from Formosa, Argentina but when I was 12, I moved to a city called Bella Vista in the Province of Corrientes, Argentina, where I have done all my studies.

When I finished high school, I decided to start the English language training (three years) and after that, I started the English teacher training degree which took me four years. I remember that, during my residency, I had four jobs, two in private institutes and my job in carpentry (the first job I had and the place where I worked for 11 years), and my first substitution in a public school. It was a somewhat exhausting year, but undoubtedly, the year where I learned most of the things I know nowadays. I enjoyed every moment and every achievement obtained.

I graduated in December 2019 and immediately started working in a primary and a secondary school and I have not stopped working since then. Before coming to the U.S., I was working in three public secondary schools. Besides, I am also running my own English private institute where I'm not only the director, but I also teach in some levels. This is my third year with the business. Currently we have about 150 students taking classes at the institute from 5 years old to 40 years old.

I am also a volunteer for the YFU Foundation (Youth For Understanding), in which we are part of the vital connection between exchange students, families and the global YFU network.

As a Fulbright, even though we can choose which school we like the most, we are not able to pick one ourselves, but to be honest since the first day that I arrived in Powell, I fell in love with the town, the people and Northwest College of course. One of my biggest dreams in life was to come to the United States, and being selected by the Northwest College Committee was and will always be one of the best opportunities in my life. I love being part of this community and the warmth that everyone has here.

Bekki Zeigler

Instructor of anatomy and physiology

I have worked as a college professor of biological sciences, focusing on anatomy and physiology, for 24 years. I received my bachelor’s in animal science from Ohio State University, followed by my master’s in biology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. I am originally from Pennsylvania, though I worked in Maryland before moving here.

I am a member and previous presenter at HAPS, the Human Anatomy and Physiology (international) Society. In addition to anatomy and physiology, I am interested in human and equine evolution and hope to become involved in ecological research in the wild horses of the area. I am thrilled to live in Wyoming, particularly in the wonderful town of Powell, and am hoping to get back into the equestrian world with a new horse friend.
