Powell High School students interested in exploring a variety of careers and gaining workforce experience before they graduate can now do so through the Northwest College Center for Training and Development.
Students can opt to choose from a series of NWC non-credit classes, and take those tailored to their interests.
The partnership, which has been in effect for about a year, allows students to take both online and hybrid classes, so they can work at PHS and at CTD.
“We are encouraging a lot of students at our alternative school to take part in some of those technical classes,” Jay Curtis, superintendent of Park County School District No. 1 said in an interview last year. “We’re also encouraging students at the high school to take part in some of those classes — it’s a little bit harder for them, because they don’t have the flexibility of schedule.”
Curtis said the district tries to be good partners to NWC and highlight some of the college’s benefits and possibilities to Powell students.
With declining enrollment at junior colleges, “we want to do our part to be part of the solution for Northwest College,” he said.
“I’m not sure that all of our students recognize the benefits of this gem that we have in our community,” Curtis said.
He and his wife are NWC alumni, and their children also have attended Northwest.
Interested students can choose to enroll in classes such as Basic Auto Mechanic I, Therapeutic Riding Course, Workforce Effectiveness Training, Certification for Hospitality and Tourism, Amtrol Trainers, Heavy Equipment Certification, Building Foundations for the Future-Building Trades, Electrical Apprenticeship, Cybersecurity, Outdoor Programs, Plumbing, HVAC, plus custom-made courses.
Students enrolled in courses are expected to treat each class like it’s a real job by calling in sick if necessary and punching a time clock if they’re working at CTD.
