Dear Editor:
Recently I witnessed an extraordinary event called the oratorical contest, sponsored by the American Legion, and was awestruck by a young man’s speech about the United States Constitution. He obviously spend a great deal of time preparing for this patriotic speech.
So why was only one exceptional youth from our community taking advantage of this tremendous opportunity?
Each year our local Post 26 approaches the high school and the community at large so our youth have an opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships. It is plain to see that there are a lot of opportunities for our young high school youth to prepare themselves for active citizenship and for their future success.
I encourage our local school district and families to keep in mind that the oratorical contest is a very worthwhile event that they might want to place on their calendars for next year. Even though only one individual is selected from the competition, all who participate will certainly walk away with a most valuable experience that will have a lasting, positive affect on them and the community.
