‘March for a Better America’ set for Saturday

Posted

For the fourth straight year, local residents will march through Cody to call attention to a slate of issues. The “March for a Better America” — formerly called the “Women and Allies March” — is set to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cody City Park.

After the march, speakers will focus on the issues of civil rights, affordable health care, quality education, participation in public policy and government accountability. Speakers, music, and refreshments will provide inspiration after the march. If Saturday’s weather is poor, the speakers may be moved to Cody’s Christ Episcopal Church (825 Simpson Ave.).

Sponsored by the local nonprofit organization Wyoming Rising, the event is being held in conjunction with the national Women’s March; the first such march was held the day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2017.

“Our purpose in joining the national event is to highlight the political power of communities to create transformative social change,” Wyoming Rising explained on its website. “Three years of organizing and building community — it’s all been leading up to 2020. With your help we have a chance to join hands across the nation to show this administration our vision of America.”

The group added that, “We can make 2020 the year we return our country to a representative democracy — of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
