Under sunny skies and warm temps, the annual Powell Golf Club Championships teed off on Saturday and Sunday and crowned winners in four divisions.
“It was awesome. The tournament went great,” said club pro and general manager Kury Reynolds. “We had 43 players, which is pretty consistent with what we’ve always had. Other than the last few holes [Sunday] where that little thunderstorm rolled in and kicked up some wind, the weather was pretty good. I think everyone enjoyed it.”
Chris Manning defended his Men’s Division Low Gross title, carding a 71-72 for a 1-under 143. Manning had to fight off a worthy opponent in Ryan Tobin, who trailed Manning by just three strokes on Sunday with three holes to play. Manning eagled the par-5 16th however, and with pars on the final two holes held on for the win. Tobin shot a plus 4 148 to finish second.
“Ryan [Tobin] was still within three going into 16, and then Chris [Manning] made eagle and that kind of slammed the door,” Reynolds said. “Ryan’s a bomber, so of the two, he’s the more likely one to make eagle. But Chris about holed his second shot, so it was over at that point.”
Low Net in the Men’s Division was earned by Jason Quigley with a 5-under 139. Tobin came in as runner up with a 2-under 142.
Numbers were a little low in the PGC ladies’ divisions, as a handful of golfers sat out the weekend to prepare for this week’s Wyoming Mid-Amateur Championships in Riverton.
“Some of our players are playing in the mid-ams this week, and didn’t want to play five days in a row,” Reynolds said. “We lost probably six players. But I don’t know if anybody would have beat Kami [Scott] anyway.”
Scott shot in an 89 on Saturday despite taking a 13 on hole No. 11, “then she shot an 80 on Sunday and blew the doors off,” Reynolds said. “And she can do that, she played college golf. But she doesn’t play a lot of golf, so when she gets going, she can play.”
Scott won the Ladies’ Division with a two-day net score of 136 (minus 8). Jess Herweyer finished with a net of 2-under 142 to finish second.
Denise Barnes carded a net score of 4-under 140 to claim the Ladies’ Senior Division title, with Alice Janes in second with a 154.
In the Men’s Senior Division, the low-gross title went to Craig Zibell, who carded a 2-over 146. Clark Jeffs and Tracy Copenhaver finished in a tie for second, each carding a 164. Copenhaver finished first in low net for the Senior Division, carding a 130; Jeffs finished second with a 132.
Marc Saylor took the top spot in both the Men’s Super Senior Low Gross and Low Net Divisions, carding a 162 and 134, respectively. Bob Mason shot a 167 to finish as low gross runner-up, while Thom Seliga’s 134 netted him second place in low net.
“Everyone seemed to have a terrific time,” Reynolds said.
