Driver inattention and speed are being investigated as possible causes of a Monday crash that claimed the life of a Manderson man.

The fatal crash occurred around milepost 17 on Wyoming Highway 433 south of Manderson. Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were notified of the collision at 3:31 p.m.

A 2007 Cadillac Escalade was traveling south behind a 2014 Nissan Titan. The driver of the Cadillac failed to notice the driver of the Nissan slowing to attempt a turn, according to the highway patrol. The Cadillac collided with the Nissan, causing it to exit the roadway and overturn.

Thomas A. Jahrig, 80, of Manderson, was driving the Nissan. He was not wearing a seatbelt and succumbed to his injuries at the crash scene.

The driver of the Cadillac has been identified as Micah E. Maas, 33, of Greybull, Maas was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported to the South Big Horn County Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. A juvenile passenger in the vehicle was in a child seat restraint and also was taken to the South Big Horn County Hospital for injuries.

The highway patrol said driver inattention and speed on the part of Maas are being investigated as potential contributing factors.

It was the 48th fatality on Wyoming’s roadways in 2021 compared to 47 in 2020 and 84 in 2019.

Wyoming’s 46th and 47th deaths of the year were recorded Saturday, when a vehice went into the wrong lane and hit two motorcyclists west of Dayton.

A 2007 Ford Crown Vic was traveling west on U.S. 14 in a heavy rainstorm with very poor tire tread, according to the highway patrol. The driver — Scott A. Nicholson, 55, of Banner — lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve and crossed into the eastbound lane, colliding with two motorcycles, according to the patrol.

The two motorcyclists, Brett E. Dickerson, 56, and Robin D. Dickerson, 57, died at the scene. The Plattsburg, Missouri, residents had both been wearing helmets.
