A Powell man escaped injury after he crashed into Bitter Creek on Thursday night near Garland.
Samuel J. Holeman, 35, had been heading from Powell to Lovell when he lost control and slid on the recently chip sealed Road 4.
Holeman later told a Park County Sheriff’s deputy that he’d been traveling about 50 mph when he went off the right-hand side of the unfamiliar road. The 2007 Lexus sedan — owned by Holeman’s girlfriend — traveled about 75 feet “before dumping into Bitter Creek” near Lane 7H, said Lance Mathess, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office. The vehicle wound up floating about 225 feet down the creek before coming to rest in a shallower, roughly 2-foot-deep section of the waterway.
The Park County Sheriff’s Office was called at about 8:30 p.m.
Holeman, who was the only occupant of the Lexus, was able to get out of the vehicle and to shore before emergency responders arrived.
He was issued a citation for failing to maintain the correct lane of travel, Mathess said. Holeman had been wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
