Ready or not, 2020 is here.
I have a suggestion for you as we begin this new year in our community. We often make resolutions for a new year. We set goals. We make plans.
William Booth founded the Salvation Army in 1865. Near the end of his life he was scheduled once more to speak at their annual convention. But due to illness, he could not attend. So he sent a message in an envelope to be read to all present at the appropriate time.
It was near the end of the convention. All wanted to hear Booth’s words that were to be read. A gentleman rose with the envelope. What would Booth say? How would it be received?
The envelope was opened. It had a single page and one word written on the page. That one word was “OTHERS”!
Jesus in John 13 showed the apostles how to serve by taking a basin of water and a towel and he washed their feet. Paul in Philippians 2 tells us to think of others as better than ourselves.
We just had Christmas. We celebrate Jesus and his first coming. For God so loved the world ... John 3:16. God gave his son. Jesus came to serve (Mark 10:45).
My point is simple: In 2020, who can you serve? Where can you serve? One way we are like Jesus is when we serve others.
Make 2020 a year of serving to others.
