The dry bean crop in the Powell area should post an average year in 2019 if September provides finishing time, says Jeff Chapman of Kelly Bean Co.
The first beans should be harvested in the Powell area around Sept. 1, Chapman said, but the majority of the area crop needs most of September to mature after an abnormally cool growing season.
“We didn’t have the heat early,” Chapman said. “We’ve got it now, but it’s going to be nip and tuck for this crop. Hopefully we have an average or later than average fall before the first frost.”
Kelly Bean Co. purchased Yellowstone Bean Co. facilities in the area four years ago. The company offers grower contracts, or growers can sell their own beans on the open market, said Chapman, who works out of Manderson and Bridger, Montana.
An average yield is possible with a frost-free September, Chapman said.
“The crop looks to be good. We’ve had no disease pressure,” he said.
