Local artist featured at Bighorn Canyon

Lovell artist Bobbie Brown will be the second Artist In Residence of the year at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. She will be in the park from Aug. 19 to Sept. 2.

As part of her residency, Brown will paint and give demonstrations on her painting style at the Lovell Visitor Center on Aug. 22 and 29, from 3-5 p.m. Brown invites visitors and local artists to bring their paints and sketch books and join her. She will also share some basic watercolor and sketching techniques.

Brown was born in Australia and grew up in northern California, going to school as a music major.  After some time she found herself in northwest Wyoming. Brown will tell you she is a darn good cook, but her interest is in the arts — visual, performing and musical. She has drawn most of her life but didn’t receive formal art instruction until she was in her 60s. She took classes at Northwest College in Powell, receiving an associate’s degree in fine arts last year.

“I create art to express what I see as beautiful or significant around me. For me, art is a tool or portal to guide people in seeing what they don’t naturally perceive,” Brown said. “Many people are walled off from our incredible environment by an increasingly dense culture. Art makes people notice the wonders of the universe, and the wonders of the clay at their feet.”

“If I can touch someone with a simple drawing, a splash of color, or a graceful line, and make someone stop and ponder for a moment, then I have created art,” she said.

Bobbie’s artistic achievements include an oil painting of the Lovell sugar factory that was selected for the Wyoming Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition in early 2017, works selected for several NWC juried student art shows and purchase awards in 2016 and 2018. Several of her paintings and drawings were accepted by the Northwest College Visualize/Verbalize publication. She also received a “Civic Award” from Powell’s Gestalt Studios at the Polar Plant in April 2016; it was an opportunity to paint and demonstrate in free studio space at Gestalt.

Brown continues to craft her artistic style and is always looking for new forms of art expression.  “I’m thrilled to be able to spend time in the Bighorn Canyon, to slow down and look and listen, draw and paint, and recreate the experience to share with others,” she said.
