Let’s work together in times of crisis

Dear Editor:

The message in Phil Anthony’s July 29 letter was hopeful. “Americans of radically different philosophies can find things to agree on” was a relief in this time of supercharged attitudes. The issue of space junk is important and I’m glad Sen. Lummis is addressing it, but what is more important is an agreement between people with opposing views.

As I get older I see the value and sense of freedom that comes from changing my mind. New information deserves new consideration.

This summer is like no other. Heart Mountain is obscured by smoke, the air is hot and stagnant, the West is drying up and “heat domes” linger as the jet stream slows down. Extreme weather events are happening all over the world. No matter what past attitudes might have been, it’s hard to ignore the fact that the earth is warming. Instead of hoping climate change is not real we need to realize that it is real, it’s serious and we need to do something about it.

The spread of the Delta variant is another issue that deserves reevaluation. Leaders who recently called COVID a hoax are now encouraging people to get vaccinated.

America, long noted as a “can do” country, needs to look toward the future, weigh new evidence and take pride in opening our minds and working together in these times of crises.
