Legislature must address runaway property taxes

Dear Editor:

The 2022 property assessments recently arrived. I and many other residents are facing 40% or higher increases in our assessments and thus our taxes. In my case, my taxes are set to increase by $800 just this year, compared to a total increase of $500 over the course of the last 11 years.

I contacted Dan Laursen, our state representative, about this issue last weekend, but he has failed to respond now four days later. I would hope that this issue would be on the front page of the paper and the primary concern of our local and state politicians. As a retired teacher, I certainly do not plan for 40% increases in property taxes, and I believe many others are facing similar bills, which is an even more pressing issue in this era of rampant price inflation elsewhere.

One would hope that at least our representatives could find a way that is well within their control to mitigate such increases; after all, property tax assessments are not simply caused by “the market” or determined by alien overlords, but rather determined by the state and local laws that can easily be changed to provide relief to all of us.
