The Powell Pioneers B team came up short in a Friday doubleheader against the Sheridan B team, losing 5-1 and 10-0 in Powell.
Kolt Flores had Sheridan off stride for four shutout innings of the opener.
“He was doing real well hitting spots and keeping hitters off balance,” said B team coach Tyler England. “So he was able to keep his pitch count low enough to go back out for the sixth.”
But in the third time through the lineup, the Sheridan hitters began to solve the puzzle, “and we made some mistakes on defense to make it even worse,” England said.
Jacob Gibson came on in the sixth and finished for the Pioneers. Sheridan scored five runs on eight hits and had no errors.
Powell’s B team had chances, but left nine runners on base. The Pioneers had one run on seven hits and committed two errors.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Sheridan collected 13 hits against Dalton Worstell and Race Degraffenreid, while again playing errorless ball. Powell had six hits and committed two errors.
Aiden Greenwald and Gibson had two hits each for Powell’s B team in game two. Gibson was 2 for 2 with a walk in the first game to give him four hits in five trips for the day.
“Even though we fought well at the plate, we struck out more than we should have” in game two, England said. “Usually this team doesn’t go down that way, but we were set down on strikes 10 times.”
